CHANGING ROLES OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN BUSINESSES

It has been known that an IT (Information Technology) system is able to equip the business sector through the core services that it provides making it easier for these establishments to execute their respective functions. Among these is the automation of the business process, providing data, connecting with the customers, as well as offering them with productivity tools.

Companies are using IT to improve the way they design and manage customer relationships. Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems capture every interaction a company has with a customer so that a more enriching experience is possible. If a customer calls a call center with an issue, the customer support representative will be able to see what the customer has purchased, view shipping information, call up the training manual for that item and effectively respond to the issue.

IT is growing increasingly important in many organizations, and that will surely continue as technology continues to grow and increase. It’s an exciting time to be involved in IT, and the smartest companies will incorporate these changes into how they run their businesses. IT used to be viewed as a backroom function in many organizations, with the main role just keeping the lights on and everyone’s computer running. There was little focus on business solutions.

However, IT world is experiencing a need for upskilling in its employees, especially as the role of IT continues to evolve into a more interdisciplinary field. Machines are becoming increasingly intelligent, so we need to train our employees working alongside them to remain agile. Just as workers across the enterprise must become more tech-savvy, workers in the IT department must understand the nuances of marketing. Chief Information Officers (CIOs) must increasingly hire employees with business acumen, not just good technical support skills. Enterprises will need to adjust in response to a changing talent ecosystem. Because of the growing role technology can play in an organization, IT is one of the most exciting areas of organizations today, no one has a better wing-to-wing view of an organization than the CIO because he or she is involved in so many strategic areas. In order to contribute to the overall strategy of an organization, CIOs and other IT leaders need to have a good idea of the technology priorities and ensure that an organization is spending the time and resources on the data and technology that really matters when it comes to increasing revenue and driving growth.

IT departments are experiencing tremendous changes as their roles expand to impact customer service, sales, and even business strategies. As a result, organizations are increasingly turning IT into a driving force in all aspects of a business.

There have been new and emerging fields in technology that have started to make their own impact with the general public. Often, this includes bioinformatics, web technologies, and cloud computing. Also joining this list of new concentrations are large-scale knowledge bases and global information systems, among the many other available emerging fields around. It is very important to note that information technology is actually an area where innovations are managed.
