Education has the universal function of contributing to the perpetration of societies by transmitting ideals, values and norms from generation to generation thereby preparing the youth for active role in the society. Education also displays the value conflicts that exist between ideals and real norms that are typical of all cultures.
Presently, education in Nigeria has not been able to achieve the noble objective because it is in deep problems. Paramount among these problems is the incessant NUT/ASUU strike, which has often disrupted academic activities. Many reasons can be seen responsible for these incessant strikes by the NUT/ASUU. Prominent among those problems according to NUT are those of funding, lacks of autonomy and dehumanizing working conditions
What is Strike?
Strike is seen as Collective organized, cessation or slowdown of work by employees, to force acceptance of their demands by the employer. The legality of the strike action requires: approval by the majority of employees by ballot; independent verification to ascertain the majority support the vote; the notice of impending strike must be given to employer in advance; the employer must be provided with the result of the ballot; final notice to embark on the strike must be issued to the employer (Business dictionary, 2015).
What Causes Strike?
- Strike is caused by irregularities of teachers’ salary.
- Indiscipline of students in various schools
- Lack of dialogue between government and Nigerian Union of Teachers or ASUU (Academic Staff Union of Universities).
Effects of Strike On Students
Strike could be a blessing in disguise because it gives some student a break from the academic work and have the chance to think and re-evaluate their lives. Some use the period to learn new skills that could be an added advantage to them.
However, the effect of these strike actions is usually decreased in performance of students’ academic in secondary school, in the years that are strike free. Persistent strike leads to low morale in both students and teachers.
Strike periods also have the tendency of leading undergraduates into some social vices like prostitution, robbery etc.
Most strikes distort the school calendar. The after-effect is prolonged school year that exceeds stipulated periods. Most academic activities for the school year are distorted. This is one major cause of producing unqualified graduates who are deficient in their fields of study. In the same vein, students who are supposed to do a four year course end up spending six years in the school for a simple programme.
An incessant strike affects the academic performances of students. As learning is suspended for a long period, the students reading abilities fall. Even the knowledge acquired during the learning period is even forgotten by some students. This mostly turns some students into certificate seekers than knowledge seekers.
There is the need for a re-evaluation because most of the causes of strikes are supposed to be looked into and addressed before it takes the prime time of students. Education should be properly and adequately funded asproper funding of education and institution will go a long way to stop further strike actions.
