Reading habits are well-planned and deliberate pattern of study which has attained a form of consistency on the part of students toward understanding academic subjects and passing at examinations and it determine the academic achievements of students to a great extent. Reading and academic achievements are interrelated and dependent on each other.

Students differ in the pattern of reading habits and come from different environments and localities with different levels of academic achievement because while some students have good reading habits, others tend to exhibit poor reading habits. Meanwhile, reading has been the passion of the greatest personalities of all times and in the 21st century networked society is no longer confined to the print reading because the scope of the reading has extended to the Internet sources that changed the traditional reading culture of the readers.

Reading and academic achievement are essential for research workers and educationists to know that every child whether he or she is gifted, average, normal or backward etc, should be educated in his or her own way but if he or she possesses good study habits, he or she can perform well in academics and in every situation because it is the reading habits which help the learner in obtaining meaningful and desirable knowledge, good reading habits act as a strong weapon for the students to excel in life

Reading is a very important issue and the basic tool of education thus  makes way for a better understanding of one’s own experiences and it can be an exciting voyage to self-discovery. However, students use digital technologies and the Internet in all facets of their daily life (school, work and leisure), text messaging, and social networking,  primarily for social and entertainment purposes. Their exposure to technology is a critical element in determining some of the characteristics attributed to these students.

The converse of literacy is difficult to measure and little is known about the millions of literate adults who rarely pick up a book or open a magazine or about school children for whom reading has come to mean textbooks or reading online. African society has been labeled as an oral society or one that lacks a reading culture, libraries however noted that; Africans are not a reading society but a chatting society and people preferred conversing rather than reading, that traditional educators were great narrators of stories which they said out loud and accompanied with dramatization and demonstrations. It has been pointed that most people in sub-Saharan Africa have little access to books and other learning resources and without proper access, it is hard to establish a reading culture.

Children and adults  need access to a wide range of reading materials to help them acquire and maintain fluent reading skills, motivation to read decreases with age, especially if pupils’ attitudes towards reading become less positive and if children do not enjoy reading when they are young, then they are unlikely to do so when they get older also their home environment is a massive influence. Surroundings should encourage reading in all its forms and support their choices of reading material, also introduce students to a wide variety of texts, mediums and genres because they may surprise themselves once they have faced preconceived ideas about what they consider enjoyable and embrace a diversity in what they read like comics, ebooks, short stories, online articles and magazines which is essential.

The internet is the communications platform on which digital media content can be delivered to a wide variety of devices, including desktop computers, wireless laptops, smart phones, and other mobile devices and over the past few decades, the growth of digital media, the rise of the Internet, and the proliferation of mobile devices have combined to burst open the very meaning of mass media so therefore the by-products of scientific and technological inventions and innovations have also contributed greatly to the dwindling fortunes of the good practice of reading among majority of the students. Today, many students prefer to watch movies and other shows on the television, listening to audio-CDs, watching video-CDs, among others and many parents and teachers complain about students of our generation who have not developed reading habits among themselves because of their lack of interest.
