Multimedia refers to any computer-mediated software or interactive application that integrates text, color, graphical images, animation, audio sound, and full-motion video in a single application. It learning systems consist of animation and narration, which offer a potentially venue for improving student understanding and involves the integration of more than one medium into some form of communication.

ICT and multimedia have been used in education for many years

Although, the use of multimedia in teaching and learning presents challenges to institutions of higher learning, but students will be successful in their learning task if they interact meaningfully with their academic material, select relevant verbal and non-verbal information, organize information into corresponding mental models, and integrate new representations with existing knowledge when learning with multimedia.

An important aspect required for multimedia learning is that learners must be able to hold corresponding visual and verbal representations in short-term memory simultaneously. Multimedia materials such as videos and interactive webpages have become increasingly popular, when used in education it is important that the quality of such materials are assessed, and if possible enhanced.

With the infusion of the multimedia technology into education arena, traditional educational materials can be translated into interactive electronic form through the use of multimedia authoring tools which has allowed teachers to design and incorporate multimedia elements into the content to convey the message in a multi‐sensory learning environment. The focus in education is thus moving towards using multimedia as the instructional media and a platform in teaching and learning.

Students who are given access to multimedia courseware, whether as individuals or in groups, can take control of their own learning, constructing knowledge at a pace and in a direction that suits their needs and desires. A step forward is the use of the overhead projector, but students require even greater stimuli to hold their attention.

Use of multimedia brings teaching methods into the 21st century and helps students catch the dream of success in the 90s and beyond.

New capabilities allow teacher-made – presentations to be accessed via the internet, allowing students the opportunity to study at home. The constructivist approach to learning in which the learner plays an active role in the teaching and learning process can further encourage students to learn through personal experiences with suitable learning material and teachers should use new and effective modes, ways, and designing thoughts into multimedia teaching practice.

Web-based multimedia represents the presentation of instruction that involves more than one delivery media, presentation mode, and/or sensory modality. The basis for the use of multimedia is the assumption that when the user interacts within these various methods they learn more meaningfully.
