THE ROLE OF ICT ON IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION

Education has a vital role in building the society. It is one of the most important needs for the wellbeing of individual and the society. Quality education helps to empowering the nation in all aspects. There are many ways to increase the learner’s knowledge, and technology is the most effective way. information and communication technologies (ICT) has contributed immensely to social and economic improvements, such as higher employment and productivity, increasing access to a higher quality of life to solve information problems in order to function in an information society.

ICT is the ability to use technology as a tool to research, organize, evaluate, and communicate information and the possession of a fundamental understanding of the ethical/legal issues surrounding the access and use of information. ICT tools are also indispensable to healthcare professionals and researchers because of the current volume and complexity of information available from different sources. Students using ICT facilities mostly show higher learning gains than those who do not use, actually it acts as an assisting tool. It provides quicker and easier access to more extensive and current information. ICT can also be used to do complex tasks as it provides researchers with a steady avenue for the dissemination of research reports and findings

It is viewed as a major tool for building knowledge societies, as a mechanism at the school education level that could provide a way to rethink and redesign the educational systems and processes, thus leading to quality education for all. ICT incorporates electronic technologies and techniques used to manage information and knowledge, including information-handling tools used to produce, store, and process, distribute and exchange information.

Investments in higher education are essential for economic growth, and the global demand for higher education is predicted to increase vastly from less than 100 million students in 2000 to more than 250 million students in 2025 which means institutions had to integrate the innovative tools made available by ICT to increase access to and improve the quality and competitiveness of higher education programs. Without these tools and technologies, individuals and institutions have poorer chances to address 21st-century issues and challenges. Therefore, higher education institutes worldwide are redesigning their educational systems, teaching methods and learning practices.

ICT can also contribute to achieving universal education worldwide, through the delivery of education and training of teachers, improved professional skills, better conditions for lifelong learning, and the potential to reach people that are outside the formal education process. Based on the same education and higher learning, ICT has the potential to increase access to training through online courses and enables healthcare professionals to be updated and trained on knowledge advances wherever, if properly designed and implemented, can generate many positive outcomes such as improved access for communities in rural or remote areas; support of healthcare professionals; real-time disease surveillance; data sharing; and data capture, storage, interpretation, and management.

More educational research is needed in order to effectively integrate the use of ICT into the field of higher education. One of the major advantages of using ICTs in the education system has been to prepare the present and next generation of students for a workplace where ICTs particularly computers internet and other related technologies are becoming more and more ubiquitous. These computer savvy and technologically literate students possess the desired competencies to use ICTs effectively.

The main roles of ICT in education are;

  4. To promote technology literacy and support distance learning.

  8. ICT helps teachers to motivate students and develop interest in learning.
  9. ICT is store house of educational institution because all educational information can safely store through ICT.
  10. ICT helps teachers to communicate properly with their students. So ICT bridge the gap between teacher and students and plays an important role in student evaluation.
